Wishes Installation: April/May 2023 A collaborative art installation by Philip Barnett and friends.
Greek philosophy and other Western cultures teach that the Universe is made up of four elements: Earth, Water, Air and Fire.
This installation consisted of 10 jam jars part-buried in the EARTH in my front garden, close to running WATER. Woodridings Stream, a tributary of the River Pinn, runs through the garden.
From the beginning of April 2023, neighbours and friends were invited to submit a wish, just one per person. This could be of a personal nature or concerning a wider group of people. Anything from a local group to the whole planet. Children were particularly welcome to participate.
Wishes had to be anonymous and written or printed on a small piece of paper and unreadable. They could be written in invisible ink, using code or just completely redacted. It was important that no-one could read anyone else's wish. This was to ensure no judgement could be made on what was a good or bad wish.
Each wish was be placed in one of the jars and stayed there until Sunday May 7. On this day at 4.30pm all the jars were opened and the wishes placed in a fire-proof container. They were set on FIRE sending the wishes into the AIR. Will they come true? We can only hope so.
