Philip as ... Singer

My first solo (Sing Lullaby), in the school carol concert, aged 10, was notable for more than once reason. In the audience was an 8 year old Judy who was to become my wife some 14 years later. She remembers the performance to this day and apparently I had a lovely voice.

I gained early performing experience in light opera including Colonel Calverley (Patience), John Wellington Wells (The Sorcerer), Major General Stanley (Pirates of Penzance), King Gama (Princess Ida), Sir Joseph Porter (HMS Pinafore), Lord Chancellor (Iolanthe), Jack Point (The Yeoman of the Guard), Cox (Cox and Box), and Frank (Die Fledermaus).

Career highlights include creating the title role of Dreyfus in the musical of the same name (1998). The first performance took place in front of a full house at St Giles Cripplegate in the Barbican, London.  I sang in the recording of War Oratorio, by Dominic Muldowney. This major, BAFTA award-winning commission by Channel 4 television was first broadcast in June 2007.  Other notable performances include the Royal Gala celebrating the reopening of the Royal Festival Hall (2007) and Helen Chadwick's The Singing Circle in the Paul Hamlyn Hall at the Royal Opera House (2008). Here a short video from The Singing Circle.

In March 2011 I was one of the three soloists in Bryan Kesselman's Voices that should be heard, a choral song cycle written for the centenary of Harrow County School, now Harrow High School (extracts bellow). This was followed in 2012 by creating the role of The Professor in The Time Traveller.

Over the years there have been hundreds of concerts and cabarets on my own, with Bryan Kesselman (under the name Entertaining People), and with small/large groups.
In particular almost 100 charity fund raising Quiz Cabarets including several online during the Covid outbreak (2020/2021). The Quiz Cabaret is a format that we invented and it proved to be very popular. It is part cabaret and part supper quiz.

Currently my singing is limited to the occasional performance with Bryan Kesselman.
We are currently preparing a new cabaret for 2027.
